Greg Henneghan

VOCALIST/PIANIST/SONGWRITER

The graduating Sixth Grade class at Shadd Elementary School in Washington, D.C. made its way to the stage and began to sing,"Wade in the Water." Suddenly, a voice boomed out from among the students, "See that host all dressed in white." The audience began to stir in their seats, with puzzled expressions on their faces that ask, "Where is that voice coming from?" That solo voice belonged to eleven year old Gregory Henneghan. Since that day Greg Henneghan has overwhelmed audiences throughout the United States, Canada, England, and Scotland.

During his teenage years, he was featured in numerous performances throughout the D. C. area such as,"Happy Birthday Black America," at the Ford Theatre, lead vocalist and vocal arranger for Tommy Bryant's, "Giants of Sound," soloist with the D.C. Community Orchestra, the McLean Symphony, Lex Luthor in the musical, "Santa and the Super Heroes," and Grand finalist in the Washington, D.C. Talent Search. Under the guidance and tutelage of such greats as Donny Hathaway and Van McCoy, Greg made the decision to pursue his life's dream of a career in music.

Perhaps his greatest influence came from R & B Artist, Angela Wimbush. During a brief stint as a student teacher at H. D. Woodson High School in Washington, D.C., Wimbush tutored a young Greg Henneghan in music theory and education. It was an experience he never forgot. Henneghan recounts, "Whenever she saw young people who were gifted, she would encourage them to develop their gifts to the fullest potential. She made a point of identifying her students' strong points. Early in my career, she recognized that my strong suit was picking up melodies, writing lyrics, and turning them into songs."

In 1991, he made a successful tour to England as a part of the Assembly of God Evangelical Tour. In 1992, he made a second successful tour to Glasgow, Scotland with the Youth Evangelistic Tour.

As a consummate performer, he has been the featured solo artist at such places as the Village Gate in New York, the Apollo Theatre, Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia, Takoma Station Tavern in Washington, D.C., and Monday Night Football on ABC Television. His performances have included opening and headlining with the likes of Jean Carn, Angela Bofill, Phyllis Hyman, Stanley Turrentine, Phil Perry, George Duke, Freddy Jackson and Musiq Soulchild, to name a few. Having an instant recall repertoire of over one-thousand cover tunes at his disposal, made him an artist with a broad variety of musical tastes and styles.

In 1999, Greg signed a contract to become the lead singer for the Platinum recording group, LTD. During his tenure with the group, they released one album. Greg wrote many of the songs for the album including the title track, Marry You. His recordings include, Going Back Home, Looking At Eternity, In Praise & Worship, Marry You, and Classic Jazz and R&B. He is founder and owner of SWAB Records

Greg Henneghan was born in South Carolina, grew up in Washington, D. C and graduated from H. D. Woodson High School. He attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

WE ARE THE HENAGAN'S

The correct spelling of our last name is H-E-N-A-G-A-N (Henagan). There are no other correct versions of our last name. The name Henagan was the last name of the people who enslaved our ancestors.

Slaves were not allowed to learn how to read and write. Slaves did not have identification cards with their name age and date of birth. Slaves did not have birth certificates or social security cards. The only thing that matter to the slave master was the age and sex of the slave. Slaves were not treated as humans but as animals. Just like a horse or a cow, a slave did not have a last name nor did they know their date of birth, it did not matter.

The slaves were freed in 1863. In the state of South Carolina, slaves were not really free until the end of the Civil war in 1865.

Most former slaves used the last name of the people who owned them during slavery.

The first time freed slaves had an opportunity to record their name and date of birth was during the 1870 census (5 years after the Civil War). The process of completing the census for a former slave was simply to give their complete name, age, date of birth and address and hope that the person who took that information spelled it correctly. We could not tell them how to spell our names correctly. In most cases we could not read or write.

That’s why our last name was spelled several different ways. For that reason, some of us spell our name Henneghan, some spell it Hennigan, some spell it Henigan, etc.

The correct way to spell our last name is H-E-N-A-G-A-N

We have to remember that Slavery In America was inhumane, and atrocious with heinous crimes committed by the slaver that stack all the way up to Heaven.
